I had been back to painting for about 2 years when my son asked me if I could recreate the Miles Davis Bitches Brew album cover. The album was released on March 30, 1970 and the album cover was brilliantly created by Mati Klarwein. I instantly fell in love with pretty much everything that Mati created. The imagery is so powerful with the vibrant colors, the flow from a calm to stormy scene, the couple’s passion is clear, the profile appears to be an overseer of life, and the turtle/flames is the catalyst of change. The emotions that the painting evokes are numerous and run from one extreme to the other, which is very impressive given that it only measures 12×12. I recreated this on a 12×12 panel and placed it in frame that only covers the sides. I had quite a bit of difficulty writing the letters on the album so I cheated and ordered a stencil of the words. Overall, I think I did a decent job recreating Mati Klarwein’s work of art and hope that someday I will start to think of how to create my own interpretation of the world that I see.
